A Garter Set Buying and Styling Guide for Beginners

A garter set is a matching bra and panty set with an attached or separate garter belt and adjustable straps, traditionally meant to hold up stockings, though most people today wear them without stockings at all, simply as the look. If you’ve never worn one before, the straps and clasps can look more complicated than they actually are.

How a garter belt actually works

The belt sits at your natural waist or slightly below, fastened either with a hook-and-eye closure at the back or, on some styles, built directly into a bodysuit. Adjustable straps hang down from the belt with a clasp at the end. If you’re wearing stockings, the clasp clips onto the top band of the stocking to hold it in place. If you’re not wearing stockings, the straps still work as a styling detail on their own.

Sizing a garter set

Because a garter belt sits at the waist rather than the bust, waist and hip measurements matter more here than they do for a standard bra and panty set. Check the product listing for the belt’s size range specifically, since a bra that fits you in a medium doesn’t guarantee the belt does. Straps are almost always adjustable in length, so small differences in torso height aren’t usually a problem, it’s the belt circumference that needs to be right.

Putting it on

Fasten the belt first, adjusting the closure so it sits comfortably at your waist without digging in. Let the straps hang naturally, they don’t need to be pulled taut before you clip anything to them. If you’re wearing stockings, roll each one up your leg first, then attach the front and back straps to the top band, adjusting the strap length until the stocking sits smooth without pulling.

Styling without stockings

A lot of our customers wear garter sets purely for the look, straps included, without ever putting on stockings. That’s entirely normal, there’s no rule that says the straps need something attached to them. Worn this way, a garter set functions more like a structured lingerie set with extra detail than a functional garment.

Care

Garter sets should be hand washed the same as any other delicate lingerie. See our full lingerie washing and care guide for the details, the clasps and hardware hold up better when they’re not put through a washing machine.
