Body-Safe Materials: What to Look for Before You Buy an Adult Toy

Body-safe materials for adult toys are non-porous and phthalate-free: things like medical-grade silicone, ABS plastic, glass, and stainless steel. These materials don’t have microscopic pores that can trap bacteria, and they won’t break down or leach chemicals into your skin over time the way some cheaper materials do.

What to look for

Medical-grade silicone is the most common body-safe material and for good reason: it’s non-porous, hypoallergenic, easy to clean, and holds up well over years of use.
ABS plastic shows up in hard-shell toys and casings. It’s non-porous and durable, though it’s rigid rather than soft.
Glass and stainless steel are non-porous, body-temperature responsive, and can be sterilized with boiling water, which silicone generally can’t handle.

What to avoid

Materials sometimes labeled “jelly,” “rubber,” or simply “skin-safe” without further detail are often porous and may contain phthalates, chemical softeners linked to health concerns with repeated skin contact. Porous materials are harder to fully clean, even with soap and water, because bacteria can settle into the microscopic surface texture. If a product listing doesn’t say what it’s made of, that’s usually a sign to ask before you buy, not after.

Cleaning and storage basics

Body-safe, non-porous materials should still be cleaned before and after every use with warm water and a mild, unscented soap, or a dedicated toy cleaner. Let them dry fully before storing, ideally in a soft pouch or separate from other toys so materials don’t react against each other in storage. Silicone-on-silicone contact during storage can sometimes cause the surfaces to degrade over time, so keeping pieces separated is worth the extra minute.
